Princess Leia - Star Wars: A New Hope - Fall 1997

There are not words to express how incredibly bad my first costume (and major sewing project) was. Truly, bad. It was made of this horrible fabric (which was cheeeep) that was like flannel but polyester. Strike one. It was sewn on a semi-broken sewing machine which had screwed up tension so it snagged frequently. Strike two. I had no idea what the hell applique was that they wanted me to do to make the belt. Strike three. Oh, and it was about 6 inches too short. I'm out of strikes, so lets say "and there's the ball game."

Despite the terrible construction, this costume gave me great joy. I had a blast wearing it on Halloween and actually put my own hair in rather massive honeybuns on the side of my head. Also, this costume was surreptitiously borrowed so that the underclassmen could portray me in the skit they perform every year for the graduating seniors, which just adds to the fond (if perhaps modestly embarassing) memories.

Alas, no photos were taken (by me anyway) and the costume does not exist anymore. It was so bad and voluminous that I turned it into scrap fabric for mockups etc. However, despite it's demise, it is long remembered and well loved (even in its infamy). The picture to the right is the scan of the actual pattern that I used. That's what it was supposed to look like...
