The entire reason this dress was made was because of the fabric that it is made from. In the Fall of 2003 I found a bolt of this fabric in the clearance section at Joann's. There was about 5 yards of it and it was marked down at two dollars a yard. I liked it and thought it was pretty, but had no idea what I'd make from it, so passed it by. Two weeks later, the bolt was still there (I guess everyone else had the same problem figuring out what to make from it) but it had been marked down to 1 dollar a yard. I decided I could spend five dollars on this fabric and figure out what to do with it later. Well, later proved to be much later. In the Winter of 2005 I realized that one of the few things that could be made from this fabric, with the strange pattern of large butterflies along the selvage and small butterflies in the middle, was a Qi-Pao style dress. I'm tall, so the long width of the fabric worked out well for orienting the pattern this way.
